At a benefit the other night, I saw Andrea Dworkin, the anti-porn activist most famous in the eighties for her conviction that opening the floodgates of pornography would lead men to see real women in sexually debased ways. If we did not limit pornography, she argued—before Internet technology made that prospect a technical impossibility—most men would come to objectify women as they objectified porn stars, and treat them accordingly. In a kind of domino theory, she predicted, rape and other kinds of sexual mayhem would surely follow.

The feminist warrior looked gentle and almost frail. The world she had, Cassandra-like, warned us about so passionately was truly here: Porn is, as David Amsden says, the “wallpaper” of our lives now. So was she right or wrong?

She was right about the warning, wrong about the outcome. As she foretold, pornography did breach the dike that separated a marginal, adult, private pursuit from the mainstream public arena. The whole world, post-Internet, did become pornographized. Young men and women are indeed being taught what sex is, how it looks, what its etiquette and expectations are, by pornographic training—and this is having a huge effect on how they interact.

But the effect is not making men into raving beasts. On the contrary: The onslaught of porn is responsible for deadening male libido in relation to real women, and leading men to see fewer and fewer women as “porn-worthy.” Far from having to fend off porn-crazed young men, young women are worrying that as mere flesh and blood, they can scarcely get, let alone hold, their attention.

Here is what young women tell me on college campuses when the subject comes up: They can’t compete, and they know it. For how can a real woman—with pores and her own breasts and even sexual needs of her own (let alone with speech that goes beyond “More, more, you big stud!”)—possibly compete with a cybervision of perfection, downloadable and extinguishable at will, who comes, so to speak, utterly submissive and tailored to the consumer’s least specification?

For most of human history, erotic images have been reflections of, or celebrations of, or substitutes for, real naked women. For the first time in human history, the images’ power and allure have supplanted that of real naked women. Today, real naked women are just bad porn.

For two decades, I have watched young women experience the continual “mission creep” of how pornography—and now Internet pornography—has lowered their sense of their own sexual value and their actual sexual value. When I came of age in the seventies, it was still pretty cool to be able to offer a young man the actual presence of a naked, willing young woman. There were more young men who wanted to be with naked women than there were naked women on the market. If there was nothing actively alarming about you, you could get a pretty enthusiastic response by just showing up. Your boyfriend may have seen Playboy, but hey, you could move, you were warm, you were real. Thirty years ago, simple lovemaking was considered erotic in the pornography that entered mainstream consciousness: When Behind the Green Door first opened, clumsy, earnest, missionary-position intercourse was still considered to be a huge turn-on.

Well, I am 40, and mine is the last female generation to experience that sense of sexual confidence and security in what we had to offer. Our younger sisters had to compete with video porn in the eighties and nineties, when intercourse was not hot enough. Now you have to offer—or flirtatiously suggest—the lesbian scene, the ejaculate-in-the-face scene. Being naked is not enough; you have to be buff, be tan with no tan lines, have the surgically hoisted breasts and the Brazilian bikini wax—just like porn stars. (In my gym, the 40-year-old women have adult pubic hair; the twentysomethings have all been trimmed and styled.) Pornography is addictive; the baseline gets ratcheted up. By the new millennium, a vagina—which, by the way, used to have a pretty high “exchange value,” as Marxist economists would say—wasn’t enough; it barely registered on the thrill scale. All mainstream porn—and certainly the Internet—made routine use of all available female orifices.

The porn loop is de rigueur, no longer outside the pale; starlets in tabloids boast of learning to strip from professionals; the “cool girls” go with guys to the strip clubs, and even ask for lap dances; college girls are expected to tease guys at keg parties with lesbian kisses à la Britney and Madonna.

But does all this sexual imagery in the air mean that sex has been liberated—or is it the case that the relationship between the multi-billion-dollar porn industry, compulsiveness, and sexual appetite has become like the relationship between agribusiness, processed foods, supersize portions, and obesity? If your appetite is stimulated and fed by poor-quality material, it takes more junk to fill you up. People are not closer because of porn but further apart; people are not more turned on in their daily lives but less so.

The young women who talk to me on campuses about the effect of pornography on their intimate lives speak of feeling that they can never measure up, that they can never ask for what they want; and that if they do not offer what porn offers, they cannot expect to hold a guy. The young men talk about what it is like to grow up learning about sex from porn, and how it is not helpful to them in trying to figure out how to be with a real woman. Mostly, when I ask about loneliness, a deep, sad silence descends on audiences of young men and young women alike. They know they are lonely together, even when conjoined, and that this imagery is a big part of that loneliness. What they don’t know is how to get out, how to find each other again erotically, face-to-face.

So Dworkin was right that pornography is compulsive, but she was wrong in thinking it would make men more rapacious. A whole generation of men are less able to connect erotically to women—and ultimately less libidinous.

The reason to turn off the porn might become, to thoughtful people, not a moral one but, in a way, a physical- and emotional-health one; you might want to rethink your constant access to porn in the same way that, if you want to be an athlete, you rethink your smoking. The evidence is in: Greater supply of the stimulant equals diminished capacity.

After all, pornography works in the most basic of ways on the brain: It is Pavlovian. An orgasm is one of the biggest reinforcers imaginable. If you associate orgasm with your wife, a kiss, a scent, a body, that is what, over time, will turn you on; if you open your focus to an endless stream of ever-more-transgressive images of cybersex slaves, that is what it will take to turn you on. The ubiquity of sexual images does not free eros but dilutes it.

Other cultures know this. I am not advocating a return to the days of hiding female sexuality, but I am noting that the power and charge of sex are maintained when there is some sacredness to it, when it is not on tap all the time. In many more traditional cultures, it is not prudery that leads them to discourage men from looking at pornography. It is, rather, because these cultures understand male sexuality and what it takes to keep men and women turned on to one another over time—to help men, in particular, to, as the Old Testament puts it, “rejoice with the wife of thy youth; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times.” These cultures urge men not to look at porn because they know that a powerful erotic bond between parents is a key element of a strong family.

And feminists have misunderstood many of these prohibitions.

I will never forget a visit I made to Ilana, an old friend who had become an Orthodox Jew in Jerusalem. When I saw her again, she had abandoned her jeans and T-shirts for long skirts and a head scarf. I could not get over it. Ilana has waist-length, wild and curly golden-blonde hair. “Can’t I even see your hair?” I asked, trying to find my old friend in there. “No,” she demurred quietly. “Only my husband,” she said with a calm sexual confidence, “ever gets to see my hair.”

When she showed me her little house in a settlement on a hill, and I saw the bedroom, draped in Middle Eastern embroideries, that she shares only with her husband—the kids are not allowed—the sexual intensity in the air was archaic, overwhelming. It was private. It was a feeling of erotic intensity deeper than any I have ever picked up between secular couples in the liberated West. And I thought: Our husbands see naked women all day—in Times Square if not on the Net. Her husband never even sees another woman’s hair.

She must feel, I thought, so hot.

Compare that steaminess with a conversation I had at Northwestern, after I had talked about the effect of porn on relationships. “Why have sex right away?” a boy with tousled hair and Bambi eyes was explaining. “Things are always a little tense and uncomfortable when you just start seeing someone,” he said. “I prefer to have sex right away just to get it over with. You know it’s going to happen anyway, and it gets rid of the tension.”

“Isn’t the tension kind of fun?” I asked. “Doesn’t that also get rid of the mystery?”

“Mystery?” He looked at me blankly. And then, without hesitating, he replied: “I don’t know what you’re talking about. Sex has no mystery.”

Women should learn self-defense. Women should lock themselves in their houses after dark. Women shouldn't have long hair and women shouldn't wear short skirts. Women shouldn't leave drinks unattended. Heck, they shouldn't dare to get drunk at all.

Instead of that bull, how about:

If a woman is drunk, don't rape her.
If a woman is walking alone at night, don't rape her.
If a women is drugged and unconscious, don't rape her.
If a woman is wearing a short skirt, don't rape her.
If a woman is jogging in a park at 5 a.m., don't rape her.
If a woman looks like your ex-girlfriend you're still hung up on, don't rape her.
If a woman is asleep in her bed, don't rape her.
If a woman is asleep in your bed, don't rape her.
If a woman is doing her laundry, don't rape her.
If a woman is in a coma, don't rape her.
If a woman changes her mind in the middle of or about a particular activity, don't rape her.
If a woman has repeatedly refused a certain activity, don't rape her.
If a woman is not yet a woman, but a child, don't rape her.
If your girlfriend or wife is not in the mood, don't rape her.
If your step-daughter is watching TV, don't rape her.
If you break into a house and find a woman there, don't rape her.

If your friend thinks it's okay to rape someone, tell him it's not, and that he's not your friend.
If your "friend" tells you he raped someone, report him to the police.
If your frat-brother or another guy at the party tells you there's an unconscious woman upstairs and it's your turn, don't rape her, call the police and report him as a rapist.
Tell your sons, god-sons, nephews, grandsons, and sons of friends it's not okay to rape someone.

(My addition - if you get the chance, beat him senseless).

Don't just tell your women friends how to be safe and avoid rape.
Don't imply that she could have avoided it if she'd only done/not done x.
Don't imply that it's in any way her fault.
Don't let silence imply agreement when someone tells you he "got some" with the drunk girl.
Don't perpetuate a culture that tells you that you have no control over or responsibility for your actions. You can, too, help yourself.

However, I really don't quite get why the media is making such an ordeal out of this, with all things considered... I've yet heard no wisecracks by Dave Letterman on Robert Pickton, the sleezy greasy pig farmer who is personally responsible for murdering scores of women, one of Canada's most notorious rapists and serial murderers... and we probably never will. The media seems to bias itself on gender.

What I mean is, my friend Ed was called to jury duty on a trial where a guy took his former girlfriend hostage in a grocery store, and put a bullet through her head and killed her. No national headlines, not a peep from satire. But when the woman, Betty Broderick pulled practically the same stunt, it made international headlines. Just this morning, in our local area I heard tale of a man who plotted to hire undercover cops to assasinate a local bar owner, but there will be no national headlines... and just yesterday was filled in on the tragic story of Nyia Page who would not go to sleep and William Page put the baby out in the freezing cold. But nobody in media is making satire, proclaiming him a "kook". Everyone knows we take the crimes of men with more sobriety and even, toleration than the crimes of women. The radio did tell of the last moments of Nyia's life... little footprints in the snow. She got up and tried to find her way around. Merely two years old.

THE SILENT SEX CRIMES
I believe it is safe to say that people who consume pornography, specifically violent pornography, place themselves at risk of engaging in inappropriate and unhealthy behaviors. Just as alcohol impairs one's perception of reality, likewise, pornography distorts a healthy view of human sexual intimacy. Of course, in saying this, I risk criticism from those who will argue that healthy sexual intimacy in itself is a subjective matter and that I should not impose my opinions about healthy intimacy on them. I wish these same individuals could sit in my chair as I listen to some of their spouses cry bitter tears of resentment about the various sex acts they have been subjected to in the name of their spouse's definition of healthy intimacy. These clients often report feeling manipulated and coerced into participating in sexual behavior that their spouse wanted, but they did not. These are, perhaps, some of the more subtle sex crimes that will never see prosecution, a courtroom, or an indictment. These crimes are emotionally and physically abusive but often fall on deaf ears because they happen behind bedroom doors in the context of marriage relationships.

WHAT IS THE PRIMITIVE REGION OF THE MALE BRAIN?

The growth of the cerebral cortex accelerated further in man´s immediate ancestors, and reached explosive proportions in the last million years of human history, culminating in the appearance of Homo Sapiens.

The primitive region in the brain, that held the circuits for the instinctive behavior of the reptile and the old mammal, was now completely enveloped by and buried within the human cerebral cortex.

Yet this ancient command post, relic of our distant past, is still active within us; it still vies with the cerebral cortex for control of the body, pitting the inherited programs of the old brain against the flexible responses of the new one.

Experiments suggest that parental feelings, source of some of the finest human emotion, still spring from these primitive, programmed areas of the brain that go back to the time of the old mammal, more than 100 million years ago.

One part of the old brain, called the hypothalamus, is only the size of a walnut in the human brain, and yet a minute electrical stimulus applied to this region in the brain can create the emotional states of anger, anxiety or acute fear. The stimulation of nearby regions, only a few tenths of an inch away, produces sexual desire, or a craving for food or water.

The hypothalamus also appears to contain centers for aggression, killing, and fight-or-flight responses.

Experiments indicate that states of anger and aggression are created by electrical signals originating in the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus behaves as though it contains a gate that can open to let out a display of anger or bad temper.

Normally, this gate is kept closed, but now and then the animal´s senses tell its brain that its rights are endangered; a mate is lured away, food is stolen, or threat signals are received; and then the package of brain survival programs called the "emotions" comes into play, and an electrical signal to open the gate comes from som ancient center of instinct deep within the brain.

It is as if two mentalities resided in the same body. One mentality is ruled by emotional states that have evolved as a part of age-old programs for survival. The other mentality is ruled by reason, and resides in the cerebral cortex.

In man, the cerebral cortex, or new brain, is usually master over the old brain. But the reptile and the old mammal still lie within us.

These properties of the human brain lead to a prediction regarding the life that will follow man. As nature built the new brain on top of the old in our ancestors, so too, in the next stage of evolution after man, we can expect that a still newer and greater brain will join the "old" cerebral cortex, to work in concert with the cerebral cortex in directing the behavior of a form of life as superior to man as he is to the ancient forest mammal.

THURSDAY, Nov. 29 (HealthScoutNews) -- As most teen-age boys know, it's not easy to keep hormones in check. While humans can control their level of sexual excitation with some effort, a new study suggests that skill is a fairly recent gift from evolution.

By studying men watching pornographic videos, researchers in Canada have pinpointed areas of the brain that become active when the men tried to avoid being stimulated. In evolutionary terms, these regions of restraint are newer than the more primitive areas where the sexual urges arise in the first place.

The findings offer more than just a glimpse at how the mind deals with sex, says study co-author Mario Beauregard, an associate researcher at the University of Montreal. "The most important message [of the research] is that a human being … has the capacity to consciously and voluntarily influence his own cerebral activity -- electrical and chemical brain processes. Undoubtedly, this represents one of the most remarkable human faculties that have emerged in the course of human evolution."

Only primates have prefrontal cortexes. That region of the brain, located right behind the forehead, is most advanced in humans and is involved in analytical thinking, multitasking and problem solving.

Beauregard says the purpose of the study was to investigate how the brain regulates itself by controlling emotion. Some experts suspect that lesions in the prefrontal cortex may be responsible for abnormal behavior in people, and some think breakdowns in the brain circuitry responsible for self-regulation could cause depression and anxiety, he says.

Beauregard and his colleagues enrolled 10 healthy white men, aged 20-42. The men watched excerpts of pornographic films that, in most cases, showed heterosexual or lesbian group sex.

Researchers measured brain activity of the men in two situations -- when they were told to let themselves be sexually aroused and when they were directed to control their urges and act as though they were "detached observers."

The findings appear in a recent online edition of the Journal of Neuroscience.

The men's prefrontal cortexes, the newer regions of their brains, turned on when they tried to control themselves. By contrast, erotic feelings prompted activity in older parts of the brain, including the region known as the limbic system, and the neocortex, which allows people to be aware of their feelings, Beauregard says.

The study, in effect, examined how the mind suppresses feelings on the borderline between voluntary and involuntary, says Dr. Thomas Lewis, professor of psychiatry at the University of California at San Francisco. Part of the challenge is that "no one has any idea how free will exists [in the brain]," he says.

It's not surprising that the prefrontal cortex becomes active when men try to hold in their sexual arousal, Lewis says. That area appears to be in charge of inhibition, and people who suffer from injuries to that region have problems suppressing inappropriate thoughts and emotions.

"They pretty much act on the spur of the moment. They say and do things that are inappropriate," Lewis says.

If that sounds a bit like a teen-age boy, there's a reason. The prefrontal cortex develops in adolescence and that could explain why adults usually control themselves better than children, Beauregard says.

In other words, as your brain grows, so does your ability to keep your feelings to yourself.

AND WHEN WOMEN WERE EXPOSED TO EROTIC VIDEOS -- THIS WAS THE RESULT:
After eight years of tests involving 3,000 women, Pfizer, the company behind Viagra, the little blue pill that has transformed men's sex lives, has abandoned efforts to prove that the drug works for females too. Its exhaustive research has concluded that men and women have a fundamentally different relationship between arousal and desire. A women's arousal is triggered by a network of emotional, intellectual and relationship-based factors rather than the simple physical response required by a man, it says. The company's sex research team admitted that they had concluded the brain is the crucial sexual organ in a woman.

Early trials, where women were dosed with Viagra while watching erotic videos, the drug appeared to work, but further studies found that even though Viagra induced a greater pelvic blood flow, the women did not feel substantially more aroused. The fact that the earth only moves for women if they think it does comes as no surprise to many leading female sexologists It has long been held in these circles that a women has an emotional libido and it only a question of, when will men realise, the only surprise has been that it has taken many hours of research and thousands of pounds to conclude something that is blindingly obvious.

WOMEN DO NOT LIKE IT
Men honestly believe because a "visual image" --flesh for fantasy, stimulates, excites, and tantalizes their senses -- women must like it too.

Wrong.

EROTIC VISUAL STIMULATION (PFIZER'S RESEARCH): While a man's arousal almost always led to a desire for sex, there was no such obvious corresponding factor with women, he said. There's a disconnect in many women between genital changes and mental changes, the same does not exist in men.

Women get satisfaction from things much deeper from emotions that involve romance and love, men on the other hand are quite basic in their instincts on desire, therefore the belief that sex is a matter of organ function, like breathing or sleeping is a totally wrong assumption to make. Pfizer say that the search for a female Viagra will continue but the benefits of this latest research has been a far better understanding of the biochemical and physiological factors involved in female sexual function.

The porn industry is with us, due to widespread ignorance, fear and superstition about sex. ON BREASTFEEDING

Superstition and Ignorance
There's been some really warped search strings pour into this website. One man was searching warped images of a "son nursing his sick father with an artificial breast". Let's be frank about this --- human breastmilk not only is too weak to sustain a grown adult, it TASTES bad. I would know. I expressed milk into bottles, and sometimes half/half'd with Enfamil baby formula. Out of curiosity to make certain the milk tasted okay -- I took a small sip and spit it out. IT TASTES NASTY. It's like watered down cows' milk.

Another MYTH, IGNORANCE and SUPERSTITION that brings male visitors to this page (Sickening Search strings such as, "When a woman is raped, what comes out of breast?") It makes me angry. It makes me very angry in behalf of all women and children that men are so warped in their thinking -- it makes me angry the male population is so filled with IGNORANCE on breastfeeding. Here is a simple fact to carry away from this page with you. Breastmilk can not be found inside a woman's breast until after delivering a baby, and even then it may take some time for "the milk to come in". Three babies, and all three times, it was a matter of several hours between the time I delivered my babies and the milk began production. Prior to that, there are only other fluids (part of milk) which are found in the breast. If a woman is not and has not been pregnant, nothing is there. One man confided in me he had tasted breastmilk from his two-month pregnant girlfriend. It's not true. . . milk would not be found in a woman's breasts that early in pregnancy.

Men make a perverse and warped fettish from something intended for a "healthy relationship between mother and child". If you ask any of these men questions on breastfeeding they can answer nothing! Why is that? SUPERSTITION spawns from IGNORANCE. Men like you are what makes women ashamed and afraid to breastfeed their children.

BUT WHO SAID MEN EVER GIVE A DAMN ABOUT REALITY, ANYWAY?
